This year at St Barnabas we will focus on the theme of "Magnifying the Light" in our Advent preparations and Christmas celebrations.

The Advent season comprises the 4 weeks leading up to Christmas. A haunting and tentative time in he liturgical life of the church it is infused with apocalyptic visions of the world to come and tender prophecy of the coming Christ child.

Christmas is the festival or birth of Jesus Christ which celebrates the day when the saving love of God became a human being. We remember the splendour of the angels proclaiming the birth of the messiah in the Bethlehem night sky alongside the remarkable vulnerability of this cosmic king born in the squalor of a stable to migrant parents who were nearly teenagers.

Prayer Kit

When you come into church during Advent, please collect a small pack from the back of church. This is your ‘Advent Prayer Kit’ – all that you will need for a short time of prayer and reflection each day, including a simple Morning and Evening prayer, a candle to remind you of God’s presence, and a picture to contemplate.

Advent Services

  • Sunday High Mass during Advent | 10:30am  – Magnifying the Light

On each of the 4 Sundays of Advent you are invited to join with the clergy team in reflecting and talking about this special season of the year. Instead of listening to a conventional sermon, we will watch a short film clip and, led by the team, you will be encouraged to reflect in small groups what Advent, with its themes of expectation, waiting, seeking, and prayer, means to you. Step outside the busy-ness of preparation for the festive season and take time to be with God as he prepares to give us the most wonderful gift of all.

  • Saturday 4 December | 10am–12:30pm – Advent Quiet Morning: The Meaning is in the Waiting

Come and spend the morning at the little church of St Mary Perivale where you can step aside from the hurly-burly of Christmas preparations for a couple of hours of quiet reflection and music. A time to be still in beautiful rural surroundings – if the weather allows, the churchyard is a wonderful haven of peace to walk or sit in – or you can take in the special atmosphere inside this 12th century building and simply enjoy its peace and holiness. Please email Mtr Valerie to reserve a place.
