Nominated Charities
St Barnabas is supporting the following two nominated charities and this year this includes all giving to Advent Boxes.
English classes for Women at St John’s Southall
“English classes for Women at St. John’s Southall is a vital support for women who came as refugees from war torn countries where they were unable to go to school. Most cannot read or write their home languages, so have no literacy skills or school experience to support their learning. When they join my pre-Beginners class, most are unable even to write their own names, so they start from absolute ground zero! After 6 months they become confident enough to hold a very basic conversation and read very simple sentences, as well as enjoying the social contact.
We have a team of volunteer ESOL-trained teachers, and helpers. St. John’s is very generous in providing space for 3 mornings a week, but we need money to buy teaching materials, books and other equipment, to expand our work – there is always a long waiting list of women eager to learn English, even though we never advertise! And please pray for more teachers and helpers so we can provide more classes.” Angela Draper - Coordinator
